I want to get a music dvd showcasing a bands live performances. I’ve been going back and forth between Nirvana’s Live Tonight Sold Out and one of the Rage against the machine dvds. and if i were to get a ratm dvd which one should it be

I personally like the Battle of Mexico City DVD the best. It is a red hot show, a great set list and the quality is much better than the self-titled. It is also a complete (well Bullet was cut out) show, which I prefer to compilations. Includes a tour of Mexico City and a documentary about the EZLN by Zack. Only annoying thing is an mtv like editing style which cuts every few seconds during songs, but I got used to it quick and barely noticed it after a while.

A beginner may enjoy Live at the Grand Olympic best. A compilation of 2 nights (last shows), both great, containing songs from all 4 albums. Great pic and sound quality; best of all three. Bonus show (most of it, anyway): the DNC 2000, great show, and some music videos.

Self-titled had clips from their 1st and 2nd tours, but mostly 94 and 96. Great clips, quality below the other 2.

Just check out clips from all three on youtube and make your decision from there.

Parents often tell their kids they can be anything when they grow up. And then there are the parents who must have told their kids they can be many things when they grow up. These kids grow up wired with creativity that needs to be plugged into more than one outlet, or they’ll short-circuit. And that includes actors who cross over into writing music and lyrics, and playing in bands. Sure, their starpower might initially get them bookings and audiences, but only true talent keeps ‘em. Here are actors whose tunes and lyrics have solidly established their credibility as musicians:

30 Seconds to Mars

Helmed by Jared Leto (”Panic Room,” “Requiem for a Dream,”), who sings, writes the band’s music and lyrics, and plays guitar, 30 Seconds to Mars is a tight, talented, intense hard rock machine. Their 2002 debut album scored mixed reviews, but their second album went platinum and spawned the singles, “A Beautiful Lie,” “From Yesterday,” and “The Kill,” featuring Leto’s anguished lyrics, “Look in my eyes/You’re killing me, killing me/All I wanted was you.”

Dogstar

No, you have not entered the Matrix — Keanu Reeves really did play bass in a band called Dogstar from 1991 - 2002. They released one EP and two indie-label albums filled with music and lyrics ranging from alternative to power-pop. Although singer Bret Domrose wrote the bulk of the band’s music and lyrics, Reeves wrote a few of Dogstar’s songs, including “Isabelle,” an ode to a friend’s young daughter, and the love song “Round C,” whose title was inspired by — brace yourself — cheese.

Juliette Lewis and the Licks

Actress Juliette Lewis (”Catch and Release,” “Natural Born Killers”) has fronted this hard rock/alternative rock band with her powerful, wild-child interpretation of lyrics and uninhibited gyrations since 2003. Lewis, who had previously sung in the movie, “Strange Days,” became obsessed with forming a band after seeing a Blondie concert. Luckily, she had that moment of truth — she and the Licks kick like a double-shot of Jagermeister. One of their most popular songs, “Hot Kiss,” has lyrics that are as scorching as its music and vocals: “I’m his favorite toy/Like a beach ball/Bang it up and down/Or throw it against the wall.”

The Bacon Brothers Band

Kevin and his older brother, Michael bring home the Bacon on four albums, as well as live shows, where they really cook. Both brothers play guitar, and definitely know their way around a fretboard. Kevin isn’t merely riding on Michael’s coattails — the guy can definitely play. The siblings both write lyrics and music, as well. Kevin wrote these introspective lyrics to one of their best-known songs, “Chop Wood (Carry Water)”: “I want to break this legacy/Change this angry history/And plant a brand-new family tree/I guess the rest is up to me.” Playing music together since childhood, the Bacons have officially been sizzling in a band since 1995.

Being a great actor doesn’t necessarily make someone a great musician. Their fame may give them access to the stage — but their talent for singing, playing, and writing great songs and lyrics will keep them there in a starring role.

Singapore is not all about the fast paced city life style, stress induced traffic jams and a culture that ruches in and out and tries to squeeze you out of the picture - so they can get to the latest bargains and be the first in the queue of something seemingly important. Singapore realises that there is a time for speed, and there is a time to languish, and the entertainment scene has responded while, with an outcropping of many live lounges and relaxing bars for visitors, locals and tourists alike.

Its time to get out of the hotel and into the city. Sure, the hotel lounge is great but all you get to meet or usually other tourists! Singapore has a wide selection of lounges that will appeal to the senses and soothe you back to a meditative state with soft tones and a great martini. Balcony Bar and Alley Bar are some of the soft shadow lounges, dark, lit by candle light and draped with unobtrusive music that just lingers in your ear and reminds you of how good it is to just lay back and relax. In fact Orchard Road is filled with such live lounges, and Alley Bar and its sister Acid Bar, has some of the greatest jazz of blues local singers on offer.

Want something more up beat and groovy? Bars like Brix at Orchard Road and Thumper at Good Wood park hotel are just some of the relaxing lounges you can try to while the night away. They have imported foreign talents, with some of the best rnb live acts and pop incarnations you will ever see. The ambience is unmatched, plush sofa seats and well made drinks in an environment just made for chilling and relaxing are some of the things you can expect when you do come to any one of these places. Brix Bar and Lounge is slightly louder and more energetic, with a band that goes from soft sounds to hard pop and famous rock ballads by the end of the night. The crowd is friendly and the beer cold, two important factors for anyone looking for a good night out.

Hop on down to Clarke Quay and jive on down to places like Pump Room, Arena and Bellini Room. Early hours, these places are lounges that boast some great live bands - and is later transformed into a club when the midnight chime approaches. Le Noir lounge and the Loof in North Bridge Road are also some of the places you can head down to for a quiet night out.

In actual fact there are tons of places that offer good seating, great drinks and even better live music all over Singapore. You just know where to look and usually word of mouth is one of the best ways to get to where you want to go. You could be hanging in some outback lounge listening to the Prince of Wales or even 72 storeys up; taking in the sounds of jazz and rock high in the sky.

Barfly, which is on the corner of the Queen Street (next to a bank and opposite the side of the castle) has live music. Prices are quite good.

You could try the Welsh Club on Womanby Street (walk down the street opposite the castle) . Drink at the Irish pub first (avoid Revolution) or there’s a Wetherspoons down Womanby Street. They have interesting bands.

For more well-known names try St. David’s Hall or CIA.

The Starting Point

(1) Never put on a live music night unless you know the alternative crowd and are into the live music scene. Most people that start a regular night love that certain brand of music.

(2) Find a local pub that is known for its live music following.

(3) If you are under 18 find a church hall or community center. Function rooms are very cheap to hire or even free at times.

(4) With pubs and nightclubs they don’t usually give up weekend nights to first time promoters unless you have proved yourself in the past.

(5) Monday or Tuesday are very good nights to start up as pubs/nightclubs are usually not that busy.

(6) Live music nights are usually run from 7.30 pm until 10/11pm. These are sometimes called early shows. The club can then put on an early show and open up after.

Promotion Checklist

Use the following checklist to ensure you are organised:

(1) The venue is booked and the price has been agreed in writing.

(2) The bands are booked and understand the night’s concept.

(3) The soundman and P.A is organised and price agreed.

(4) Flyers, Tickets and posters designed and printed.

(5) Promotional material distributed accordingly.

(6) Budget calculated and allocated.

How to make your promotion stand out?

You will need at least 6 weeks to promote your event. Most venues are booked months in advance so being organised is essential. Many events fail because they are poorly organised or badly promoted.

Promotion Tips:

(1) Find events that showcase the type of theme similar to yours and distrubute flyers and posters.

(2) Street flyering

(3) Nightclub exit flyering

(4) Most towns or cities have a small publication like a “Local going out guide” or “What’s on guide”.

Miami’s South Beach is the area to see and be seen. Tampa heaves with cool clubs and bustling bars. The Walt Disney Resort alone has an amazing number of discos, comedy clubs, restaurants and dinner shows.

The best place to spot a celebrity is

Bash, South Beach, Miami.

Bash is a European-style dance club. Sean Penn and rock star Mick Hucknall of Simply Red were the original owners of Club Bash and the trend has been carried on by current owner Steve Gabur. This is a great club and a perfect place to star gaze at the odd celebrity. A-list clientele have included Johnny Depp, Linda Evangelista, Antonio Banderas and more.

The best place to check out Rock bands is

Cheers, Fort Lauderdale

A friendly, casual atmosphere bar, which showcases current live classic Rock and Blues shows seven nights a week. It also has a busy dance floor. There is pool and darts, cheap chicken wings and a Wednesday night taco and tequila party.

Kissimmee entertainment for the whole family.

The night comes to life in Kissimmee where you’ll find a special brand of entertainment the whole family can enjoy. There is live rodeo every Friday night for romping, stomping, heart pounding fun.

Classic cars cruise down the streets of Old Town on Fridays and Saturdays. There are Themed dinner shows that provide distinctive entertainment each night of the week. You will also find plenty of entertainment for everyone at Walt Disney World Resort’s Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island.

Universal Orlando Resort’s CityWalk also offer more night-time entertainment nearby.

Stay at these vacation rental homes in Orlando, Florida, whilst being entertained in Kissimmee. Low cost luxury villa accommodation are just 10 minutes away and available at http://www.milkriver.co.uk Rent directly from the owners and save.

There are a number of ways you can get people you’ve never met or who’ve never seen you live, to book your band. The fastest and least expensive way to start getting gigs is using the phone.

First, make sure you’ve got a long list of target venue name and numbers and you’re clear in your own mind about why a venue should book you.

Can you really get places to book you over the phone without you even meeting them? The answer is certainly yes.

Some people try to make out that selling is a “black art” with secrets known only to the few. That you have to be a “born salesperson” and have the “gift of the gab” before you can succeed.

The good news is you don’t need to be an extrovert who can talk for his country to get gigs from people you’ve never met. You just need an established system or framework and the self belief this will give you. If you can learn to play a guitar or remember song lyrics then you can certainly master the basics of selling. Well enough in fact, to keep your band busy throughout the year.

Not only that, but because people tend to think that being able to sell is the domain of only the chosen few, when you are able to get gigs by selling your band, you can make yourself indispensable to any band.

Face to face selling, the much feared “foot-in the door” isn’t something you’ll need to concern yourself with for gig-getting. There are ways to secure all the bookings you need without ever having to get in front of anyone to sell your act.

Ask don’t tell

The first thing to remember about selling is that it’s primarily about asking questions of your prospective buyer. Selling your band isn’t (just) about telling a venue booker how great your band is.

Only once you’ve asked questions to find out what the venue may be looking for do you tell them why they should consider hiring you.

What you’re trying to do in asking questions is to gain ammunition that you’ll use when the time comes to tell them about your band.

The system I’ve used to get gig after gig and which can work for you, revolves around 3 key questions you’ll ask.

1. Check they have time to talk to you (don’t imitate the worse kind of call centre behaviour and go ploughing into a speech about yourself if the person you’re calling hasn’t said he has time to listen).

Introduce yourself (“I’m in a local covers band that plays at Chaser’s wine bar amongst other places….” or whatever)

2. Tell him/her you have one quick question to ask “If that’s ok?”

3. Ask them about the bands they currently use and if they meet all their requirements

When you’ve asked this last question you’ll either get a “Thanks but we’re happy with our current acts”. In this case tell them you understand and you’ll stay in touch. Do this with a newsletter on a regular basis until you secure a booking.

Or, more often than you’d imagine, you’ll be told they are looking for new acts or their roster of bands could do with improving. When you get one of these responses there’s a booking there for the taking. Use another question and ask them how you go about getting considered to play there.

Some will ask for your demo CD or myspace details. Providing you have what they ask for and you sound at least reasonable you’ll get the gig when you’ve they’ve listened to it and you call them back. But you will probably need a number of follow-up calls to chase them. Don’t give up on the follow-up. I’ve had more than one venue take 5 or more follow-up calls but then become regular profitable venues for us.

Other places you call will ask about your price and availability immediately. So make sure you know the price you’re aiming for and you’re armed with your gig diary for every call so you take the booking there and then.
