Why do bands suck when they play live?

Some bands just don’t do great live. My Chemical Romance is one of my favorite bands, but their live performances are not nearly as good as the recording…I love Paramore too, but the live performances are okay, but not great. Paramore sounds cool on their albums though. I know the problem is the singer in most cases of live bands. Why is it such a different experience? I know that they fix up mistakes in recording studios, but when they play live there shouldn’t be much of a difference.

As someone who does music production, a few ideas

A) Auto-tune, Compression, Filters, Sound/synth background effects/add-ins..and recordings done via multiple microphones with different 5+ band EQs for each mic are possible in studios. Often none of these set-ups is possible live, especially in a not-so-fancy venue.

B) Better acoustics in the studio vs. the live venue

C) Multiple recording takes in the studio (many bands I know of even record each riff separately)

D) Let’s get real…in recording studios the band pays a lot for recording time while in a live act one of the members may arrive, say, a bit drunk/drugged/hung-over or just honestly dog tired from a multiple-day long bus trip to your city.
————————————-
Some musicians I’ve heard who are just as good live include Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Darius Rucker, and Carlos Santana. Sadly, with most "multi-platinum" artists, most of the polish is added by lots of studio work…it’s kind of like photo-shopping some pretty-good-looking woman’s pic to look dashingly super-model-ish.

Then again those are not huge/major groups (at least on the level of, say, Nickelback) but more self-sufficient and independent acts and, as such, their live and studio setups are much more alike than more major-label type artists. Plus they rely more on musical technique and less on fancy effects to back them up…so even if you gave them terribly crappy recording equipment you’d still find they retain much of their quality.

Peer to Peer File Sharing Software P2P

Peer-to-peer file sharing software p2p networks allow those that use them to use a file-sharing network to share files: in this case generally music, video and games files. This is done by connecting storage devices such as hard disks, USB memory and DVD disks between two or more computers and transferring selected files from one to another.

Although the vast majority of such peer to peer file sharing software p2p networks are true networks, offering connections directly from provider to user, it was not always that way. Some still contain elements of the old Napster client-server structure that ended in the old Napster dying because the network was destroyed when the central hub, the Napster server, was removed.

Napster arose from its ashes as a regular paid service, but without its original pizzazz, and those software p2p systems that came after it had learned. They consisted of a more direct architecture whereby a direct route between the provider and client for the file was provided. If A wants a copy of a movie, game or music file, the P2P software provides a direct .link between A and all the peer to peer file sharing members that are online. The packets making up the file are downloaded simultaneously from all logged in members that have the file on their storage device (generally the hard disk or a partition of it). This connection can be between you and your neighbor, or the Queen of Sheba, provided she is live on the network.

You can have access to hard disks of every other member of your network that is online, and the download speed is determined directly to the speed of your internet connection, the software, the internet connection speed of the provider of the file and the number of other users using the network at the time of download, but can be exceptionally quick, particularly with paid, as opposed to free, software PSP services. Examples of such peer to peer file sharing software P2;Pervices are the open source Gnutella network, used by Limewire, Moviedownloads, and Bearshare, and the eDonkey network used by Kazaa and Overnet services. Another is BitTorrent, although that is a different type of system.

The base software P2P networks are open source, and hence free to use. However, the paid membership sites, that generally charge a one-time life membership fee, offer support, a better directory structure, faster downloading speed and many other benefits. These are real benefits, and one of t5he best is that the membership version is free of Spyware and adware that comes along with the free versions. Adware puts pop-ups on your screen related to your browsing habits, and sometimes you cannot remove these without switching off your computer. Spyware can read your keystrokes, and hence capture your banking and credit details: enough said!

PAID FILE SHARING NETWORKS

The paid software p2p services are not paid networks, but provide access to the open source networks that is guaranteed free from viruses, adware and spyware, and monthly paid membership p2p services offer you unlimited downloads of music, games an movies. Although it is sill possible to download current hits, you should avoid that since it is illegal, and stick to those tracks in the public domain and not protected by copyright. In fact some current chart hits are already protected by software that stops you downloading them, but they are still very much in the minority.

Most peer to peer file sharing software p2p networks will inform you if you are trying to download a copyrighted file, and give the you opportunity to stop or to continue. However, you are still allowed by the software to download a Number One hit, although it would be wrong of you to do so. In fact it is possible for one member of a p2p service to purchase a top blockbuster movie online, and then allow it to be distributed to millions of others for no more than their initial membership fee: in other words, basically for nothing. Imagine what this would do to future and income of those working in the entertainment industry! However peer to peer file sharing software p2p can be used for the benefit of the industry if used as it was originally.

The original software p2p networks offered new singers, bands and movie makers the opportunity to showcase their work free of charge to the public. In this way they became known, and their work would slowly start to sell. As they became better known, they would gather a fan base, and eventually become stars in their own right. Many Indie bands started off that way without having to spend much money. They could get comments and valuable criticism, and find out how popular they were. Some could use that information to improve until they felt ready to launch commercial work. Computer games could be tested before going onto the market. Bugs could be fixed and the product perfected.

However, many selfish people are still ruining it for those that want to use these peer to peer file sharing software p2p services as they should properly be used. They copy movie hits and current music onto hard disk, and then onto portable disks for commercial sale. In fact the authorities should be tackling the big dogs - the pirate gangs that make millions through illegal movie and music downloads. But they do not - they prosecute kids that don’t know better or want to download a track to assess before buying the album, and fine their hard-working moms
.
That is not to say that downloading copyrighted material should be legal, but it would help if some proper ‘high profile’ prosecutions of professional pirates were made. That would be a more positive message to the ordinary person that they are doing wrong than just prosecuting a few kids and their moms.

THE PROPER USE OF P2P FILE SHARING NETWORKS

Check your network for public domain material, or look for it online and search for it using your network search facility. You can also check out your favorite singer’s website, particularly new singers or bands, and ask what free downloads are available. Search for legitimate free movie downloads - you will be surprised at how many are available. You should also check out the copyright laws for your country. Copyright does not last for ever, and they go into the public domain after a period of time. After that they can be legally downloaded free of charge using p2p file sharing software.

New bands or singers can record their work, and open it for free download. Simply place it on your hard disk and advertise it - it’s better than YouTube because there is no time limit. When you consider the one-off payment, you actually pay very .little for the peer to peer file sharing software p2p network service of your choice, offering free music downloads, free movies, and free computer games. However, you are advised to use your p2p file sharing service within the terms of copyright law.

Great Heroes of Classic Rock You Should Know About But Your Probabl’y Dont

Classic rock is a term used loosely to describe albums released in the early to late 70’s by artists that have become legendary and therefore “classics.”

Most of these artists were highly original and became influential on many bands in subsequent generations to come. No matter what era you were born in, almost any band you listen to has been influenced by artists and bands from the 1970s. Moreover, even if you are only in your teens and you think your favourite band is “totally original,” chances are they were influenced by a musician or group from that era, even if they don’t consciously know it.

The seventies were a great era because it was truly a ground breaking time for music. Nothing was copied or rehashed and everyone had their own sound. The 1970s represented a culmination and expansion of sounds that were experimented on in the 1960s. Bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Free, Allman Brothers, Queen, Black Sabbath, Cream, David Bowie, Status Quo are all examples of acts who made their start in the 60’s but found their sound and style in the 70’s, and therefore gave rise to many other bands who then added their own flavour to these styles.

Lesser known bands such as Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Grand Funk Railroad, Scorpions (who became quite huge in the 80’s), and Thin Lizzy are worthy of mentions but would not necessarily legends, where as other acts such as Queen became absolutely huge and remain so to this day.

It is the same with guitar heroes. Almost every guitarist, no matter what age, has heard of or listened to Hendrix, Clapton, or Jimmy Page but there are other extremely talented and influential guitarists who are less well known that should have legend status as well. Two such examples are Richie Blackmore from Deep purple and Michael Schenker from UFO. You will find some modern players such as Kirk Hammet and Dimebag Darrel were heavily influenced by Michael Schenker, but Schenker has not really achieved “god like” status some of his contemporaries like Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton have.

I could go on for hours about classic rock and there are hundreds of excellent albums that are still available today but some songs and albums deserve special mention for their guitar prowess and are worth your time to have at least a quick listen. Here’s a quick list of four lesser known gems of classic musical genius that are worth a listen:

Deep purple:

Guitarist: Richie Blackmore:

Choice albums: Made in Japan and Deep Purple in Rock

Songs: Highway Star, Child in Time.

Some of the most blistering guitar work you will ever hear recorded in the early 70’s and held the Guinness Book of Records title as the loudest recording ever made!

UFO:

Guitarist: Michael Schenker.

Choice Albums: Phenomenon and Force It.

Songs: Rock Bottom

One of the most exciting and dynamic solos ever recorded, he was about 18 at the time!

FREE: (later to become” bad company” another excellent act!!)

Guitarist Paul Kossof

Album: Best of Free.

Songs: All Right Now, Fire and Water, .Mr. Big [live]

Simplistic and slow style excellent natural tone, all feeling!!! A Les Paul plugged straight into a marshal, no pedals and no tricks.

WISHBONE ASH:

Guitarists: Andy Powell & Ted Turner.

Choice albums: Argus and There’s The Rub.

Excellent melody and twin harmony lead breaks, copied by many acts since! Very complex arrangements.

Girls in a Boy’s Club

It won’t be a bit of exaggeration to say that the heavy metal music scene is a male dominated one. Right from the inception of heavy metal, when bands like Black Sabbath took music to a darker alley, 90% of the crowd is male. Even today, every metal show you land up on, you are bound to find a much skewed male – female ratio in favor of the male. It was and to some degree, still is a boy’s club, where it is perfectly OK to take off your shirt and get sweaty and eventually, smelly.

But, what is heavy metal if there is no defiance? Before too soon, girls in metal were not just groupies or some rock star’s girlfriend holding his jacket in the pit. Many came out to the stage and took the male dominated audience by storm – and they loved them for it.

We have singled out the five most influential female Metal bands that we have seen so far.

Girlschool

There was no way that the first spot would have gone to anyone else but Girlschool. This all-female British heavy metal band originated as a part the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. This was the era of fast guitar playing and operatic vocals popularized by pioneer New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

Band members Enid Williams (bass, vocals) and Kim McAuliffe (rhythm guitar, vocals), used to play for a band named Painted Lady before teaming up with Kelly Johnson and Denise Dufort in 1978 to form Girlschool. Their first single got them an invite to open for legendary Heavy Metal band Motorhead on tours. Girlschool got more success the following year, touring Europe as support band for Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep.

In the following years, they managed to gain a worldwide cult following while performing as support band for groups like Rush, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Scorpions, Twisted Sisters, Alice Cooper and Blue Oyster Cult. Their close association with the band Motorhead earned them the title - Headgirl.

The band has released 12 studio albums till date, 3 live albums and numerous compilations. Girlschool is the longest running female rock band in the world so far.

Doro

During the 1980’s, there were only a few female artists in the heavy metal scene. Doro Pesch was one of them, heading the Germen heavy metal band Warlock. The band started in the traditional metal way in their first album Burning the Witches, drawing inspiration from bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Accept.

After their first album, Warlock released two albums – Hellbound and True as Steel, in two consecutive years.  After a few line up change, their fourth studio effort – Triumph and Agony was released in 1987. The band went on their first major US tour, opening for Megadeth. However, after another line up change, Doro Pesch was the only original surviving member of the band. Since she did not have copyrights for the name ‘Warlock’, Doro decided to name the band after herself.

Doro currently is very active in the metal scene, doing what she does best. She recently played live at Magic Circle Festival 2008.

Arch Enemy

Angela Gossow is the reason for Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy to be on the list. The band was originally formed in 1996 mainly due to the effort of Carcass guitarist Michael Amott. Originally, the band was fronted by Johan Liiva, but Angela Gassow joined in as frontwoman for the band in 2001.

The most remarkable thing about the band is its vocal delivery. Deep guttural vocal style has long being a male dominated field. Angela Gossow truly shattered that myth sounding equally ‘brutal’ if not more than her male counterparts. Many new female talents who have started learning and mastering this extreme vocal technique admit to drawing inspiration from Angela Gassow.

Kittie

Anyone who had not heard the band Kittie is in for a surprise. The name Kittie sure doesn’t sound like a metal band. Group members intentionally opted for a weak sounding name to shock people – which they sure did.
Kittie is an all female Canadian metal band based in London. It was formed in 1996. Their shot to fame was propelled by their hit single Brackish in 1999. They played as a support band for Slipknot the following year which helped them to gain a fan following in the metal underground.

Following their initial success with the debut album Spit, Kittie have released three more albums – the most recent one being Funeral for Yesterday in 2007.

Evanescence

Singer, pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody came together in Arkankas, US in 1995 and founded the band Evanescence. Musically, the band was a mix of nu and gothic metal with a hint of symphonic metal. Amy Lee’s powerful and haunting voice together with tight music play by the band was an instant hit in the mainstream. Their first full length album – Fallen – released in 2003, won two Grammy awards and sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. The album spent an unprecedented 43 weeks in the Billboard top 10, going on to become 6 times platinum in the US. A compilation album titled Anywhere but Home was released the next year.

Their third album titled The Open Door was released in 2006. Line up changes in the band has resulted in the change of the band’s music from one album to another. When co-founder Moody left the band in 2003, following the Fallen tour over ‘creative differences’, Terry Belsamo from Cold was called in. Bassist Will Boyd too left the band in 2006 to spend quality time with his family.

Many critics accuse Evanescence to be ‘a pop version of an already diluted brand of metal’. Critic Bill Lamb of About.com tags the group succinctly as “pop-goth”. These accusations became even stronger when lead guitarist Gregor Mackintosh of Paradise Lost, a late 1980s heavy metal band mentioned about a generation gap between his group and Evanescence.

These have not bothered Amy Lee much as she continues to make appearance and sing in many concerts. After all, even Metallica, the biggest metal band in the world have been termed as ‘sell outs’.

Slipknot and Nickelback Songs

Slipknot and Nickelback are premier heavy metal bands hailing from United States and Canada respectively. Both have dedicated fan following, release albums periodically and give live performances in world stages. It seems that these bands have turned rock music on its head with varied themes and music styles.

Nickelback has produced six studio albums, one compilation album, twenty-two single songs and seven video albums till now. Although initially the band was country based, they are well known now in different countries including United States and Canada. With such unique songs under its belt, Nickelback has transcended all borders, including political and mental. Initially, it was the youth that got attracted to Nickelback songs, but people from other age groups are also found to be increasingly appreciative to this style of heavy music.

Nickelback discography dates back to the initial album, Curb, released in 1996. The second album, The State came four years later, in 2000. The next three albums were Silver Side Up, The long road and All the Right Reasons released in 2001, 2003 and 2005 respectively. The songs are well admired and have a cult following too. The next one, titled Dark Horse, is in the pipeline and may come out at the fag end of the year 2008. Consisting of eleven tracks, the album is all set to create a flutter, not only in the minds of the avid heavy metal fan, but in the music track industry too.

Slipknot also ranks high up in terms of popularity and exclusivity. The nine member band formed in Iowa plays the heavy metal genre with their own twists and turns. Visually also the band is totally distinctive with every member of the band wearing different masks during live performances and recordings. The debut album, Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat immediately garnered attention, not only because of the songs, but for the title too.

The key musical influences on the band are the death metal, black metal, heavy metal and the nu metal. Its primary influences are Black Sabbath, Slayer, Judas Priest, Beastie Boys etc. They band has also been profoundly influenced by other bands like Head of David, Goldfish, Neurosis and Jungle music. Slipknot is ranked as the path breakers on American new wave heavy metal. The live shows given by the band are well known for the energy flow.

Slipknot music has a unique flow, sometimes in the extreme, and sometimes, a little subdued. Vocal styles range from rapping, singing and growling. However, the later day songs have more melodic singing, but the themes still continue to be aggressive. Darkness, disaffection, anger, psychosis and nihilism are the most preferred themes followed by Slipknot.

Bands like Slipknot and Nickelback are not bubbles formed on the surface of the sea of music. The uniqueness of their themes and unmatchable energy beckons the energetic youth to follow them.

A Rocker’s Guide to Phuket

Fans of rock music will certainly not be disappointed with a trip to Phuket. The island has a vibrant live-music scene that covers most of the bases, from jazz through to good old rock n roll. If you’d rather mosh to rock than bop to dance beats, there are a few clubs and pubs you ought to know about.

Although it’s something of a cliché on the island, Rock City on the beach road in Patong is an established rock club that caters to a primarily tourist clientele. As soon as you see the enormous gorilla above the entrance, you know you’re in for a treat, and Rock City delivers.

Rock City is a fun kind of place with bands comprising of locals, Aussies, Swedes, Filipinos and so on. There are usually three or four bands on per night and each has a different style and character. You won’t hear any original songs at this Phuket club, but you will be able to dance away to the links of Bon Jovi, Metallica, ACDC and Guns n Roses, as well as a few more-modern bands.

As if one Rock City in Patong wasn’t enough, there is now a second venue at the top of Soi Bangla, on the opposite from the beach. It’s much the same as the original Rock City, but the acoustics are a little bit different. Expect to drink and dance until about 2 am.

Although it’s primarily a jazz club, Karma Lounge in Kata is a fun live-music venue where the music sometimes drifts into rock. The vibes are always positive at this Phuket club and people get down until the early hours of the morning.

Of course, no trip to Phuket would be complete without sampling the local rock scene. Although there aren’t many bands in Phuket penning and playing their own songs, there are a lot of decent cover bands playing in local clubs.

9 Richter in Phuket Town is a good place to catch Thai live music. The venue also hosts special events with famous stars from the Thai rock and indie scenes.

Also in Phuket Town is Blue Marina, at the Phuket Merlin Hotel. This is an exciting club popular with young people in Phuket. The music is always fast and fun, plus Blue Marina also hosts special events with popular bands.

The majority of Phuket’s rock clubs can be found in Patong. It usually takes a little stroll around the area to find somewhere playing live music. The quality of the bands varies considerably and there is an unhealthy obsession with the likes of Bon Jovi, but it’s all in the holiday spirit and the drink are cheap and even the Thais seem to have a good time.

Rock on, brothers and sisters.

Lights, Camera….lyrics! — Actors in Bands

Parents often tell their kids they can be anything when they grow up.  And then there are the parents who must have told their kids they can be many things when they grow up.  These kids grow up wired with creativity that needs to be plugged into more than one outlet, or they’ll short-circuit.  And that includes actors who cross over into writing music and lyrics, and playing in bands.  Sure, their starpower might initially get them bookings and audiences, but only true talent keeps ‘em.  Here are actors whose tunes and lyrics have solidly established their credibility as musicians:

30 Seconds to Mars

Helmed by Jared Leto (”Panic Room,” “Requiem for a Dream,”), who sings, writes the band’s music and lyrics, and plays guitar, 30 Seconds to Mars is a tight, talented, intense hard rock machine.  Their 2002 debut album scored mixed reviews, but their second album went platinum and spawned the singles, “A Beautiful Lie,” “From Yesterday,” and “The Kill,” featuring Leto’s anguished lyrics, “Look in my eyes/You’re killing me, killing me/All I wanted was you.”

Dogstar

No, you have not entered the Matrix — Keanu Reeves really did play bass in a band called Dogstar from 1991 - 2002.  They released one EP and two indie-label albums filled with music and lyrics ranging from alternative to power-pop.  Although singer Bret Domrose wrote the bulk of the band’s music and lyrics, Reeves wrote a few of Dogstar’s songs, including “Isabelle,” an ode to a friend’s young daughter, and the love song “Round C,” whose title was inspired by — brace yourself — cheese.

Juliette Lewis and the Licks

Actress Juliette Lewis (”Catch and Release,” “Natural Born Killers”) has fronted this hard rock/alternative rock band with her powerful, wild-child interpretation of lyrics and uninhibited gyrations since 2003.  Lewis, who had previously sung in the movie, “Strange Days,” became obsessed with forming a band after seeing a Blondie concert.  Luckily, she had that moment of truth — she and the Licks kick like a double-shot of Jagermeister.  One of their most popular songs, “Hot Kiss,” has lyrics that are as scorching as its music and vocals:  “I’m his favorite toy/Like a beach ball/Bang it up and down/Or throw it against the wall.”

The Bacon Brothers Band

Kevin and his older brother, Michael bring home the Bacon on four albums, as well as live shows, where they really cook.  Both brothers play guitar, and definitely know their way around a fretboard.  Kevin isn’t merely riding on Michael’s coattails — the guy can definitely play.  The siblings both write lyrics and music, as well.  Kevin wrote these introspective lyrics to one of their best-known songs, “Chop Wood (Carry Water)”: “I want to break this legacy/Change this angry history/And plant a brand-new family tree/I guess the rest is up to me.” Playing music together since childhood, the Bacons have officially been sizzling in a band since 1995.

Being a great actor doesn’t necessarily make someone a great musician.  Their fame may give them access to the stage — but their talent for singing, playing, and writing great songs and lyrics will keep them there in a starring role.

What bands live dvd should i get?

I want to get a music dvd showcasing a bands live performances. I’ve been going back and forth between Nirvana’s Live Tonight Sold Out and one of the Rage against the machine dvds. and if i were to get a ratm dvd which one should it be

I personally like the Battle of Mexico City DVD the best. It is a red hot show, a great set list and the quality is much better than the self-titled. It is also a complete (well Bullet was cut out) show, which I prefer to compilations. Includes a tour of Mexico City and a documentary about the EZLN by Zack. Only annoying thing is an mtv like editing style which cuts every few seconds during songs, but I got used to it quick and barely noticed it after a while.

A beginner may enjoy Live at the Grand Olympic best. A compilation of 2 nights (last shows), both great, containing songs from all 4 albums. Great pic and sound quality; best of all three. Bonus show (most of it, anyway): the DNC 2000, great show, and some music videos.

Self-titled had clips from their 1st and 2nd tours, but mostly 94 and 96. Great clips, quality below the other 2.

Just check out clips from all three on youtube and make your decision from there.

Recommended Live Lounges in Singapore to Visit

Singapore is not all about the fast paced city life style, stress induced traffic jams and a culture that ruches in and out and tries to squeeze you out of the picture - so they can get to the latest bargains and be the first in the queue of something seemingly important. Singapore realises that there is a time for speed, and there is a time to languish, and the entertainment scene has responded while, with an outcropping of many live lounges and relaxing bars for visitors, locals and tourists alike.

Its time to get out of the hotel and into the city. Sure, the hotel lounge is great but all you get to meet or usually other tourists! Singapore has a wide selection of lounges that will appeal to the senses and soothe you back to a meditative state with soft tones and a great martini. Balcony Bar and Alley Bar are some of the soft shadow lounges, dark, lit by candle light and draped with unobtrusive music that just lingers in your ear and reminds you of how good it is to just lay back and relax. In fact Orchard Road is filled with such live lounges, and Alley Bar and its sister Acid Bar, has some of the greatest jazz of blues local singers on offer.

Want something more up beat and groovy? Bars like Brix at Orchard Road and Thumper at Good Wood park hotel are just some of the relaxing lounges you can try to while the night away. They have imported foreign talents, with some of the best rnb live acts and pop incarnations you will ever see. The ambience is unmatched, plush sofa seats and well made drinks in an environment just made for chilling and relaxing are some of the things you can expect when you do come to any one of these places. Brix Bar and Lounge is slightly louder and more energetic, with a band that goes from soft sounds to hard pop and famous rock ballads by the end of the night. The crowd is friendly and the beer cold, two important factors for anyone looking for a good night out.

Hop on down to Clarke Quay and jive on down to places like Pump Room, Arena and Bellini Room. Early hours, these places are lounges that boast some great live bands - and is later transformed into a club when the midnight chime approaches. Le Noir lounge and the Loof in North Bridge Road are also some of the places you can head down to for a quiet night out.

In actual fact there are tons of places that offer good seating, great drinks and even better live music all over Singapore. You just know where to look and usually word of mouth is one of the best ways to get to where you want to go.
